Design: Barcode Scanners

Various scanners designed with Altitude Inc and Symbol Technologies. Next Generation Industrial Scanner - The client sought to rethink their workhorse industrial scanner. After extensive user research and competitive analysis, the team explored a modular platform. This approach allowed for tailored solutions based on application needs. The form and details were designed to be rugged and intuitive, while emphasizing outstanding ergonomics. Handheld Terminal - Merging a barcode scanner with a touch screen interface posed an ergonomic challenge. The visual dominance of the display caused user to aim inaccurately. The team created a functioning testing tool that allowed exploration of different angles and relationships. After extensive testing, an effective product architecture was established. Handheld Terminal Cradles - The client required a cradle system that provide charging and a backup battery. Additionally, the design had to work as a single using or multiples. The solution lived-up to the clients high ergonomic standards and fit the overall visual brand language. Customer Scanning System - The client sought a user-friendly solution for a scan-as-you-shop terminal. Informed by extensive user research and testing, this design shifted the product architecture away from the traditional gun-like format. This design allowed user to easily use their finger to scan and thumb to navigate other functions. This concept was later designed for production and has been in use for over 20 years.
